The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the United States on five European individuals working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe such as the French president charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been at the heart of efforts to introduce laws governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The bans were imposed on Tuesday against a former EU commissioner who helped draft the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Regarding Governance
This European legislation is viewed by US officials as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are necessary to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming part of a much broader existing cultural and political conflict involving Washington and Europe.
