The buzz surrounding The Game Awards has been intense, especially after presenter Geoff Keighley posted a mysterious photo of a strange statue. The mystery has been revealed. Larian Studios is creating a completely new Divinity game.
Announced as Divinity, the game was presented with a bold trailer packed with striking imagery, from a burning man to scenes of revelry and the literal opening of infernal gates.
Moving Beyond Original Sin
For those hoping for Divinity Original Sin 3, that is not happening. Larian clarified that a direct sequel to its beloved RPGs is not on the cards right now.
That said, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a evolution of the main series. This choice of words implies that the team could be crafting a faster-paced experience as opposed to another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a announcement clip is available.
The Legacy of Divinity
The Divinity series is highly rated and many say it kicked off the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are known for detailed worlds, choice-driven narratives, and deep class systems—traits that later were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.
While its setting is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the immense freedom granted to the player.
In contrast to modern RPGs have pared back options, Divinity is packed with niche playthroughs you can achieve by choosing a specific type of character with a specific history of choices.
The series is also famously open-ended, allowing players to experiment in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be approached in multiple ways, often in unexpected fashion.
- You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
- Or, you could defeat a foe by moving environmental hazards in a clever way.
More to Come
It is these creative systems that allow people to hail games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, the RPG community can look forward to more where that came from in this legendary franchise.
