Seven alleged individuals of German far-left group stand trial over multiple attacks

A group of seven people allegedly belonging to the left-wing extremist organization Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, facing charges for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the moniker “Hammer Gang”.

International terrorist designation and legal charges

Recently, the US government classified Antifa Ost as a terrorist group along with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind attacks on sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a restaurant owner in Thuringia, whose establishment reportedly served as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, causing several with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and international connections

The trial involving six men and one woman is expected to run until mid-2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M, also face charges for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an yearly gathering known as the “day of honor” that attracts far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, a different German individual, Maja T., is currently on trial in the Hungarian judicial system for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both far-right and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within Antifa Ost, tasked with organizing violent acts and recruiting accomplices.

Alongside Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group reportedly stockpiled hammers, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

A different activist formerly involved with the group, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within certain radical left communities following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on presumed far-right targets.

The US designation renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes offering assistance to them.

The German right-wing Alternative for Germany welcomed the American move and urged the German administration to take similar action. In contrast, the country's diplomatic office simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the American classification.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. The ringleaders and most aggressive participants have already been convicted or are in custody.”
