As any significant prize-giving event nears, there’s always a demand for the addition of new categories to honor overlooked contributions and delight the spirits of fans dedicated to specific genres.
Another commentator previously argued advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. The same goes for board games, representing a passionate advocate's mission. However, I must insist for pushing forward just as with other single-minded supporters, I possess a compelling case backing this proposal is the most urgent and important of all. Here's the proposal: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
The Genre Classification Challenge
Classifying creative works is not a science; it’s very subjective, and it will always generate discussions concluding with vague boundaries. This explains why film award organizations don’t do it. However, it represents an essential concession in the world of gaming, which are so diverse it's challenging to consider them a single creative category.
To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to be recognized, while allowing diverse titles to receive proper recognition, specific award classifications remain vital.
Existing Game Classification System
Prominent interactive entertainment events offer these award types recognizing Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, and Sports/Racing games. Together, these six categories successfully include numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.
Not so for brain-teasing titles. No appropriate category exists for their placement. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios in another game. What category would fit them between these six categories? Unfortunately, nowhere.
The Representation Problem
There are dozens of brilliant puzzle games released every year lacking appropriate categories in entertainment awards, unless they happen to qualify classification types such as Mobile Game, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging Indie races.
- An iconic brain-teaser got overlooked for anything in 2014
- A different innovative game was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked that year
- Limited numbers of logic titles scraped into independent or mobile categories
Importance of Logic Titles
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art behind logic titles carries substantial weight. Well-known matching games stand as most popular titles worldwide maintaining this status for an extended period.
The legendary block-stacking game rivals popular creative games for the title of highest-selling title ever; it’s also in the running as greatest title ever. Puzzle games are foundational within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation with diverse game types.
Proposal and Rationale
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — perhaps, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
And to reiterate, these are games lacking appropriate categories at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators function at the demanding boundary of video game design, developing some of essential manifestations of the video game form. Similar to movie stunt professionals, they merit acknowledgment. We shouldn't delay generations.
