Wimbledon Adopts Video Replay System for the First Time.

The Championships tennis court with video review technology

Wimbledon will follow the American and Australian Opens in implementing video review technology.

Replay technology will make its debut at Wimbledon in the upcoming tournament.

Competitors will gain the option to challenge certain calls from the official, echoing the practice currently in place at both the US Open and the Australian Open.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and the number one court for the duration of the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles matches.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the longstanding tradition of line officials.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors cannot to challenge the accuracy of the ELC system, but they can ask for the official to review specific decisions, such as:

  • Whether a ball has double-bounced.
  • If a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a rally.

Importantly, there will be no limit on the amount of challenges a competitor can ask for.

Practical Application

An illustrative case took place in a recent tournament recently, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against his opponent.

The British player conceded it was a difficult call for the umpire, but thought his opponent had "played the rules effectively."

Official Aurelie Tourte watched a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Wider Implementation

Video reviews are not exclusive to major tournaments. The system has been in use at the American major for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the women’s WTA Tour, and by the coming year the men's ATP Tour will have the system implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

Another innovation at Wimbledon 2025 will be the addition of graphical cues on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a shot was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days remaining until the start of the Championships, the AELTC have also revealed an expansion in daily capacity at the qualifiers in Roehampton.
